The Neo-Assyrian empire covered a large area of the Near East, roughly following the ‘fertile crescent’ running from the Persian gulf, up the Euphrates and Tigris, down the Levant and onto the Nile.

Able to command vast armies and with the resources to equip and train them; they were an extremely formidable force, unequalled by any single foe.

Assyria was surrounded by enemies, externally and internally. In the end it was a combination of the two that lead to the empires inevitable downfall.
