Achaemenid Persia was one of the greatest empires in history. At its height it spanned most of the known world and controlled enormous wealth and manpower. The empires organisation and and administration was impressive, it owed much of this to their Assyrian predecessors.
Darius and Xerxes pushed the empire to its limits, across the Hellispont and into Europe.
The invasion of Greece was a response to the Athenian support of the Ionian revolt of the Greek cities in Asia minor. Xerxes army, although large by ancient standards would not have been as large as previously thought. Lastest estimates point to it being around equal to their Greek opponents.
